Fitness is not only about what we do but also about what we eat!

In general the body needs a variety of different types of food in order to supply the body tissues with certain essential nutrients.

Good sports fitness nutrition should essentially be common sense. The nutrients we need are available naturally in many types of food.

There are 6 major nutrients essential to healthy living. These are:

Water

Vitamins

Minerals

Protein

Fat

Carbohydrates

My clients usually come to me because they want me to help them to lose some weight. You must be cautious when handing out advice on nutrition. Stay within your expertise, don't give out advice if you are not an expert. By all means you can give your opinion about something but if you are not too sure about the answer it is best to just explain that you aren't sure but you will find out for them.

You can certainly explain to them that there are 3500 calories in a pound and to lose a pound of fat you must create an energy deficit of 3500 calories. In short you must take in less energy than you expend.

There are 5 rules of sports fitness nutrition. They are:

1. Eat at least 5 times a day.

2. In planning a meal stick to a ration of 1 part fat, 2 parts protein and 3 parts carbohydrates.

3. When you do sit down to eat, think about what you're going to be doing afterwards. If you're going to rest eat fewer carbs but if you are going to be working out eat more carbs.

4. You can't lose fat quickly unless you're on a negative calorie balanced diet. ie, taking in fewer calories.

5. Supplement your diet with vitamins and minerals.

Baring in mind these are only guidelines, as long as you eliminate junk foods, drink plenty of water, determine your protein requirement, consume high fibre foods and exercise to increase your lean body weight and boost your metabolism, you should lose weight safely and efficiently.
